Anyone can write a headline for a mail or a blog line send. Can
you send a persuasive mail that will get opened?
Writing compelling headlines appear to be the conundrum faced
by most marketers trying to get their mails opened let alone read.
Are Irrelevant Headlines The Problem?
In their frustration, you will soon be receiving outrageous claims
in the headlines for great sums of instant income; or just as many
outrageous headlines you know they can’t deliver on,
Sure curiosity will get the better of you but will you read the mail?
Will you take the required action? Hardly. The content seldom if
ever, relates to that wicked headline.
Pull that stunt more than once, and your mail becomes fodder
for the delete key no matter what you offer next.
Stay honest with your subscribers. Test the waters for what they
are looking for. Listen to the feedback or the lack of it. Once you
have demonstrated your skill to attune your writing to their need,
they will look forward to your mails.
When you get it right, they will respond. Here are five ideas to
get your grey cells thinking.
1. Create Curiosity Headlines
Just don’t go overboard. Think about what your mail content will
be then carefully choose demonstrative words that hit the emotional
buttons. Carefully craft words that will make them want to know the answer.
2. Pick a common problem
Take care to construct it. Nothing builds a solid rapport with your readers
than framing a problem they can relate too. Step-by-step configuring an issue
that touches them; taking care in outlining the problem so they gotta read your
mail, see if it is exactly the problem they may still be facing.
3. Headlines Should Be Pleasantly Brief
Some may be sweet but that can wear thin.
A headline starting or ending with your keywords that flat out
draw the reader in works best. Yes, keep it short for the best
emphasis. And make sure it clearly states the reason for the mail.
4. Use the Numbered List headline idea
Use odd numbers as they always seem to draw the reader to
open the mail. FIVE or the number 5 Reasons to … ; or 3 Times the
Profit’ or Discover 7 Ways to Train climbing roses. Questions often
pull best. Are you using …; or Have you tried …? Add your numbers and
the reason for the headline that fits the content.
5. Shock and Awe Headlines
I covered the danger of these types of headlines at the beginning.
However they do seem to work IF you are more than a bit careful
of your verbiage combined with promise or teaser.
Avoid false claims, or padding expected results. If the truth won’t
cause your mail to be opened, then the lie won’t either. At least not
more than once. As for sales? If you lie, then forget it!
I am going to add one more that has no specific headline. It is more
of a resource idea. STOP using the same old verbiage wrapped in
supposedly new excitement.
When there is nothing new in the over-used verbiage in your super
super headlines, the results are still the same. The opening rates
hardly move up the scale.
Keep a good thesaurus on your desktop. I grew up with Roget’s Thesaurus
and if you do not own a dog-eared copy then get one.
At least have a pdf or a bookmarked link to one that will turn your
maudlin dull copy into something that will really strike a nerve.
Last tip: Number 2
Alludes to the core being of all of us. We are first and foremost,
emotional beings. Use that Thesaurus and make a swipe file of
Pandora’s Box. See how many versions you can create that will
touch all phases of emotion and put some life into both your
headlines and the body content.

Thanks Dale. Blogs emails, articles etc etc you want them read and commented on lol then
spend the time it takes to create the kind of headline that both engages and encourages
your viewer to read.
