Happy Labor Day!

Most Americans think of Labor Day as an American Holiday,
but Labor Day has its origins in Canada. Canada gets credit
for inspiring the ‘Nine-Hour Movement‘ to support striking
workers, in 1872.

A little more than 100 years ago, you would be working
slave labor hours. Americans used to work 12-hour days,
seven days a week, in the 19th Century. Not just men,
but women and children too. Can you imagine sending
your five or six-year-old children off to work in factories
and mills?

The horror of these excruciating work conditions led to
the birth of labor day. Who made it a national holiday
in the US? That honor is up for grabs as some people
claim it was Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the
American Federation of Labor, others say it was
Matthew Maguire, a machinist.

September 3, 1916 – The Adamson Act – 8-hour work
days came into effect.

September 5, 1882- more than 10,000 people marched
from City Hall to 42nd Street, to enjoy a family picnic
in Windle’s Elm Park. Courtesy of the Central Labor
Union. New York City is considered the birthplace of
Labor Day.

Oregon was the first State to celebrate Labor Day as a
legal US holiday in 1872. Then Colorado, New York,
Massachusetts and New Jersey followed as the first
states to declare Labor Day a state holiday.

Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday
in September since 1894.

Lastly, Labor Day also signifies the end of summer.

  1. Test – finally the beginning and that is what it is, just the beginning.
There is so much to write about. So much new members and even
experienced members who have been through the mill, learning
to be an integral part of the Traffic Exchange Industry and as
    valued marketers.

May your future be bright and profitable.

  2. I used to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week, back in the day when I could handle it. I hated it but the money was so good. You had just enough time to eat dinner, clean up and go to bed before getting up at 4 am to do it all over again.

The hours were set like that cuz the job was providing security for executives of a striking airline. So we did not work year round, but when we did, it was usually for 3 to 6 month, sometimes longer. They paid for the hotel, and per diem of $30 a day for food.

I worked 6 months on one assignment, 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. It was an easy job, the standing the whole tie was the hard part. Sometimes I think about going back into that work, like the travel, but hate the hours.

    1. Wow Shon! I recall those days as well, but glad they are behind me.
The J. O. B. market today is so unstable, short-lived projects and you
are out there looking for more work. 12-hour days seem to be back as
      well.

Have a feeling sometimes, that we are going back in time and not a very
good time either for current and coming work generations.

  3. Learned something new today Fran! Always thought Labor Day was an American holiday. Congrats on putting this all together. Looks great! Look forward to reading more..cheers!
